The key to success for most projects is a committed, passionate, energetic and capable cadre of volunteers. And the broader the base of volunteer support, the less the project relies on one or two people to move it forward.

If you’re not in a position to support BHCD’s projects with financial contributions, perhaps you would consider volunteering your time to help make one or more of them happen.

Please learn more about our sponsored projects (from the list on the right) and contact the project leaders to learn more about how you can help support their efforts!

As part of the effort to update the community on the current status and scope of the Sidewalks and Pathways Initiative, a “Fact Sheet” has been developed. It outlines what is contemplated by the Initiative, plans for funding the work and status of the Initiative’s efforts to raise the requisite funds for pre-application engineering work and for the “local contribution” portion of the Maine state grant program.

Action Taken

Blue Hill Community Development was launched via the action of several “incorporators” and elected its inaugural Board of Directors. The organization is still awaiting approval from the Maine Secretary of State and, once approved, will apply to the IRS for federal tax-exempt status as a 501(c)(3) organization.

Grant Applications

While many of BHCD’s initial organizational costs and activities have been contributed on a pro bono basis, other costs (such as insurance) will require funding. BHCD discussed applying for several potential grants that fund “seed capital” and “capacity building” for suitable local organizations.

Johanna Barrett has offered to help guide BHCD through the process of applying for several grants—anyone willing to help out is encouraged to get in contact with her or BHCD at info@bhcd.org

The “Blue Hill Cares” annual spring clean-up, organized by Vaughn Leach and Chrissy Allen, has been a tremendous success over the last few years.

While virtually 100% of the effort is entirely volunteer-based, there is a need for some equipment for clean-up and safety. BHCD has agreed to act as fiscal sponsor for this community effort, so that donors of cash or goods for qualifying activities can be eligible for a charitable deduction on their income taxes.

If you are in a position to contribute some safety equipment or want to support the cleanup with a monetary contribution, please contact Vaughn or Chrissy directly, or through BHCD at info@bhcd.org

You have hopefully seen the publicity surrounding this weekend’s “Blue Hill Cares” roadside cleanup this weekend. While a few groups have already started their cleanup and others will do so “off-schedule,” the concerted effort to clean up the last year’s trash will be on Saturday, May 4.

If you’re able to participate, meet at the Blue Hill Consolidated School at 8am for a “quickie” organizational meeting for trash bag distribution, safety briefing and road segment assignments. Here’s a link to the Facebook event page.

Blue Hill Cares (and the cleanup) are sponsored by Blue Hill Community Development, so qualifying contributions for next year’s cleanup may be tax deductible for the donor. If you’re willing to contribute (beyond physically collecting trash), please contact Vaughn Leach to see what’s needed.
