Kentucky Coffeetree
(Gymnocladus dioicus)
The trees large, coffee-like, seeds were used as a coffee substitute
in the early 1800's. Large, flat bean pods hang from female tree during
the summer. Forms an open crown, slightly narrower than tall at maturity.
The bark is a distinct, gray-brown, with large, rough scales. Leaves are
large and drop during fall. Does best in moist, well-drained soil, but
tolerates drier and slightly alkaline soils.
